John Goldfarb, Please Come Home! (1965)

Originally written as a movie script that did not sell by William Peter Blatty, best known for "The Exorcist".  It was turned into a novel that sold well enough to get a movie offer and the original script was used.

William Peter Blatty:
In the early 50's he worked for the Psychological Warfare Division, USAF.

A Lebanese American, he first made a name for himself as "Prince Xeer", a fictitious blacksheep son of King Saud of Saudi Arabia. He even appeared as this character on "You Bet Your Life" reportedly conning Groucho.

In 1960 he published "Which Way to Mecca, Jack?".
Reading of the first chapter.

Blatty has an interesting film history.  He wrote the Blake Edwards films "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" (1966) and "A Shot in the Dark" (1964). He wrote two episodes of "Insight" (the Twilight Zone of religious programs). He also wrote and directed the ultra-auteurist "The Ninth Configuration" (1980)

The script was brought to the screen by J. Lee Thompson, director of "Cape fear" (1962).

Other highlights of Thomson's directional career include "I Aim at the Stars" (1960), "The Guns of Navarone" (1961), "Taras Bulba" (1962), "Kings of the Sun" (1963), "The Chairman" (1969),  and "The planet of the apes" flicks.
